Queensland Liberals rebut NBN roll-out plan

Queensland’s state Liberal party has begun poking holes in state Labor’s NBN strategy, criticising Labor’s reliance on disaster relief  to sell the NBN to Queenslanders.

Talking to The Australian, the Queensland liberals ICT spokeswomen Ros Bates said the NBN would not aid Queensland during another flooding incident, as potential damage to the network would limit its effectiveness.

"The damage which will inevitably occur to fibre trenches dug for the NBN roll out, as a result of Queensland’s widespread flooding, raises concerns about whether much of the NBN would be neutralised in major flooding events. Fibre is not immune to damage, wash aways and collapses, it can be quite fragile in certain natural circumstances,” Ms Bates said.

Ms Bates also told The Australian Labor's plan to use a backup wireless network to improve aid during times of emergency closely mirrors Malcolm Turnbull’s alternate policy to the NBN.

Ms Bates added that she was not “anti-NBN” but is opposed to how the government was undertaking its roll-out.
